ROTE Learning
By Dave Kettner

We all remember memorizing the multiplication tables.  Our teachers would show us flash cards and then have us write down the times tables over and over so that we could memorize them.  This form of memorization is called Rote Learning.  It is simple memorization for the sake of memorizing.  There is no who what when where how, there just is.

Rote learning has been around for centuries.  Mathematics studies are the most reliant on this form

of memorization for the simple fact that there is not much to understand behind the mathematics them.  4x2=8.  End of story.  Rote learning doesn’t deal with the intercomplexities of the subject at hand, rather Rote learning focuses on memorizing the material through constant repetition so that it can be called upon from our banks exactly the way it was heard or read.

Rote learning has gained a bad rap for being nothing more than a regurgitation of information by the student.  The student may not have a clear understanding of why they are memorizing it or how everything flows to make the thoughts easier to obtain.  There are some courses of studies, mostly dealing with speech and vocabulary that have to rely on rote learning.  Spelling is one of those processes.  Students must be able to decipher the difference between to too and two when spelling and the best way to go about that is to have them memorize the definitions of each word.  The same holds true for infants or adults trying to learn a language.  Steady repetition will help them memorize the sounds that need to be made in order to get their point across.

Studies have suggested that countries that are behind in educational systems are failing because of a total reliance on rote learning.  Since the students are not urged to think about why things are the way they are, and rather just force fed the information with the “because that’s the way it is” tag line they cannot comprehend more intricate information.

The rote learning system is perfect for some areas of study and extremely difficult to integrate to others.  If you are a teacher, research what has been working best and think about the methods that were successful in your student career.  Once you have a nice blend, stand in front of the class and aid them in their memorization of information.
